Volunteer Spotlight: Mike James

A Love for Sports and Service

Growing up in a small farming community in Michigan, Mike James was surrounded by the values of hard work, teamwork, and community spirit. Sports played a huge role in his upbringing, and from an early age, he developed a deep love for golf. Whether it was competing with friends or practicing his swing, the game quickly became a passion that would stay with him for a lifetime.

After graduating high school, Mike took a path of service, enlisting in the Marine Corps before joining the Fire Control division of the U.S. Forest Service. While attending San Diego State University, he continued his commitment to public service, eventually transitioning into a career as a park ranger. Over the course of 40 years, he dedicated himself to protecting and preserving the beauty of Washington State Parks, ensuring that future generations could enjoy the great outdoors.

A New Chapter in Pinehurst

In 2020, life brought Mike to Pinehurst under unexpected circumstances. After the passing of his wife, his daughter—who owns a home in the area, encouraged him to relocate and start fresh in a community known for its rich golf culture. Embracing the change, he settled into the Village of Pinehurst with his loyal Yorkie, Jackson, by his side.

For Mike, staying active and engaged was essential. With decades of experience mentoring young athletes, he sought an opportunity to continue making an impact. When he learned about First Tee – Sandhills, he immediately knew it was the perfect fit.

Making a Difference Through First Tee

Mike had always found joy in teaching sports to younger generations, but First Tee provided something special. A chance to not only share his love of golf but also help kids develop confidence, perseverance, and life skills along the way. Each program day became a highlight of his week, offering a sense of purpose and connection.

“I get such a sense of joy when I see a young person have an ‘AHA!’ moment—when they finally hit a golf shot they never thought was possible,” Mike shares. “At the end of our program days, I come home feeling energized and in a better mood. And, of course, my Yorkie, Jackson, thinks it’s time to play, making for a perfect day!”

A Legacy of Mentorship and Fun

Even in his 80s, Mike continues to prove that the love of the game, and the joy of giving back, can last a lifetime. His story is a testament to the power of mentorship and the impact a dedicated coach can have on young lives. Whether he’s guiding a nervous beginner or celebrating a child’s first great golf shot, Mike knows he is shaping more than just swings…he’s helping build confidence, character, and future game changers.

Through First Tee – Sandhills, Mike has found not only a way to stay connected to his lifelong passion but also a meaningful way to contribute to the next generation. His enthusiasm, kindness, and dedication remind us all that volunteering isn’t just about giving…it’s about growing, learning, and finding joy in the moments that matter.

Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Shreve J!

For the past five years, Shreve Johnessee has been an invaluable part of First Tee – Sandhills, bringing his deep love for the game to our 12+ groups. His passion for golf began at the age of 10 in York, PA, inspired by his parents, both avid players. From high school golf to summer rounds, the game remained a constant in his life—even throughout his career as a dentist (because, as he jokes, “everyone knows every dentist plays golf!”).

Upon retiring, Shreve made the perfect move—to Pinehurst, the Cradle of American Golf. With a lifelong appreciation for the sport, he knew he wanted to give back. That’s what led him to First Tee, where he helps young players not only develop their golf skills but also build the values that make the game so unique—integrity, self-discipline, and personal growth.

Shreve’s passion for mentorship is evident in every session he leads. Whether he’s refining a teen’s putting technique or sharing stories about the lifelong friendships golf has given him, his goal remains the same: to spark in young people the same love for the game that has meant so much to him. We’re beyond grateful to have Shreve as part of the First Tee – Sandhills family. His dedication, warmth, and passion continue to inspire the next generation of golfers!

Volunteer Spotlight: Kelly Hardy

Born and raised in Northern Virginia, Kelly spent majority of her adult life in greater Washington, D.C. There she invested forty years working in government relations and political advocacy at the federal level.

Kelly and her husband, Jack, have always enjoyed the game of golf. Throughout the years, they travelled to countless golf courses and tournaments all over the world, but nothing quite compared to the charming Village of Pinehurst. After three visits to the area, Kelly and Jack bought a condo on Lake Pinehurst where they made lifetime memories with family and friends for the next 17 years. Upon retirement, they could not imagine a more perfect place to settle than the Sandhills of North Carolina.

Once settled in their new house in Southern Pines, Kelly went straight to First Tee – Sandhills to see how she could get involved. Both Kelly and Jack had volunteered with First Tee – Greater Washington, DC and she wanted to continue working with the organization. Since 2013, she’s supported the chapter’s efforts in countless ways — from fundraising, event planning, gift procurement, and data processing; to volunteer recruitment and day-to-day office work. She’s continually inspired by working alongside Courtney and her team, who are passionate about the First Tee’s mission and dedicated to the young people they serve.

“I am always energized by being in the office with Courtney and her enthusiastic and dedicated young staff. They are all so dedicated to their craft, the mission of First Tee and, most of all, the youngsters they are serving. It is heartening to see such good work being done for so many young people in our community. They are truly building game changers! I am honored to be a small part of their efforts.”

Kelly – your support, enthusiasm, guidance and can do attitude ensure we are always working to accomplish our lofty goals here in the Sandhills. When we are tired, you lift us up; when we miss a target, you help us recalibrate for the next one. Thank you for being our person for the last 12 years. XOXO.

Volunteer Spotlight: Steve Felice

Steve Felice and his wife, Pat, hail from Upstate New York. After an impressive career as Senior Vice President for one of the largest global mining companies, Steve retired in 2022. To celebrate this new chapter, Steve and Pat embarked on a cross-country road trip. One of their stops was Pinehurst, where they volunteered for the U.S. Women’s Open Championship at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club.

During their three-week stay, Steve and Pat fell in love with the Sandhills area and made the big decision to relocate. Later that summer, they bought a home in Pinewild. Steve had a strong desire to stay involved in his community and expressed interest in volunteering with First Tee – Sandhills to his realtor, Jennifer Nguyen, who happened to serve on the Board of Directors for First Tee. Through that connection, Steve met with Courtney, and his volunteer journey with First Tee – Sandhills began just a few months later. Steve’s dedication and enthusiasm have made him an invaluable part of the First Tee team. He’s passionate about helping young golfers develop both their game and their character, and we’re so grateful to have him on board!

“The work with First Tee has been a fantastic experience and exactly what I was looking for. The First Tee team and my fellow volunteers, mentors and coaches are wonderful, caring people who live the values and mission of First Tee. Over the past two years supporting First Tee, the picture that comes to mind when I reflect on my time is simply the smiles on the faces of the kiddos — when they show up and when the go home after the sessions!”

Volunteer Spotlight: Derek Klootwyk

Hailing from Miami, Florida, Derek’s journey spans from excelling in high school baseball and football to volunteering at Shea Stadium in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks.

Witnessing the military buildup in the Middle East while working as a stockbroker, he felt a profound calling to enlist in the U.S. Army, dedicating over 18 years to Special Operations in some of the world’s most dangerous regions.

Amidst the chaos, a newfound passion for golf emerged just three years ago, leading to a commitment of playing three times a week. Beyond personal enjoyment, he extended his love for the game by volunteering as a coach for First Tee – Sandhills and a girls’ high school team over the past year and a half, contributing to the growth of young golf enthusiasts. Derek’s profound love for the game of golf transcends personal boundaries into acts of community service and inspiration.

“My favorite moment while coaching at First Tee – Sandhills had to have been while working a goal post drill on the range. One of the players was having difficulty making good contact, let alone getting it through the goal posts we had set up. But, with some extra encouragement from the other players, he was able to knock it through. The smile on his face and the loud cheering and emotion from his friends, is a moment I will never forget.”

Look for Derek this Spring at First Tee – Sandhills Programs at Gates Four Golf & CC and Stryker Golf Course.

Thanks Coach Derek for your commitment to Building Game Changers.

Volunteer Spotlight: Manisha

Manisha spent many years of her life traveling the country. From growing up in New England, to living on the West Coast, to attending college in Philadelphia, and traveling from state to state for work, she has spent time in many different areas. Manisha and her husband decided to move to Pinehurst to plant roots and be closer to their family. They moved, site unseen, and found a house on the internet. Manisha and her husband could not be happier in this magical town. While Manisha was not always interested in golf, her husband began playing from a young age. After watching Tiger Woods play, Manisha became entranced with the game and started playing with her husband. She is grateful to have golf in her life and wanted to pay it forward which compelled her to volunteer at First Tee – Sandhills. She loves seeing all the kiddos’ smiles and joy every time they come to class!

“My determining factor to continue coaching and supporting First Tee is believing that I am making a difference in someone’s life. It may not be monumental; it may not be felt until years later and I may never actually know that I did. I truly believe, if a seed is planted in someone for the love of the game, it will transform that person as golf did for me. That transformation is different for everyone, but the inner fortitude that comes from improving in golf can only be achieved by looking inward and reaching newer heights within yourself.”

Volunteer Spotlight: Mike

Mike grew up in Pontiac, Michigan. After joining the Army and becoming a paratrooper, he moved to Fayetteville to continue his training and career. Mike always had an interest in golf so when his term of service ended and his wife’s coworker suggested First Tee, he knew it was an opportunity he couldn’t pass on. Mike wanted to share his love and knowledge of the game with the next generation.

“I wish I’d had the opportunity to do this as a child, so I’m thrilled that I can introduce a younger generation to the sport. My favorite moments from the spring season were when I was out coaching at Gates Four Golf & CC. When I would see a kiddo struggling with a chip or putt, I would give them a word of advice and encouragement. Seeing them apply it and cheering after a good shot makes it worth it.”

Volunteer Spotlight: Paul

Paul is originally from Lewiston, Maine but spent much of his life in Phoenix, Arizona working and raising his two sons with wife Diane. Like many, Paul moved to Pinehurst after retiring to enjoy the multitude of golf courses the area has to offer. He started volunteering his skills with First Tee – Sandhills four years ago. Thanks to Paul, our Equipment Loan Program has expanded and become a huge success . He single handedly took hundreds of senior, ladies, and adult clubs and converted them to junior sizes so they would be ready to put in our kiddos hands!

“I received a handwritten letter from a young girl personally thanking me for cutting down her putter at the last minute so she could use it in a tournament the next day. The letter still hangs in my shop today. It reminds me that our future is in good hands with kids from First Tee – Sandhills.”

Volunteer Spotlight: Tracey

Tracey is originally from Grand Forks, North Dakota, but spent most of her adult years in Florida establishing a career in public assembly facility management. Tracey often vacationed to Pinehurst. When the opportunity to move to North Carolina presented itself, she and her family packed up and settled in. Tracey became involved with First Tee – Sandhills to share her passion and love for golf with young kids in the community. She loves watching the kids grow in confidence and skill throughout each season.

What attracted me to volunteering for First Tee was the opportunity to work with kids. I love the approach of working on core values while learning to play the game of golf. The two go hand-in-hand beautifully.”

Volunteer Spotlight: John

Originally from the cold, snowy state of Michigan, John and his wife moved to Pinehurst for the warmer weather and promise of green golf courses. Since his own were little, John has enjoyed coaching and setting good examples for kids at a young age. In 2020, John joined our volunteer team. Since then, his passion for continuance learning has led John through Level II Coach training. And, his love of engineering landed him a key role on our STEM Camp Curriculum team. This spring, you can find Coach John at Pinewild CC on Tuesdays!

“I am really drawn to First Tee’s mission of enabling kids to build character and life skills through the game of golf. Seeing how many kids keep coming back each spring, summer and fall…. seeing them start progressing through the program… they continue to be excited and engaged week after week… it tells me we are doing something right. And, I just really love that!”

Volunteer Spotlight: Hayden

Hayden spent many years of his childhood in the Pinehurst area, so it is not surprise he started his golfing career early. Before the age of five, Hayden had already been gifted his first set of clubs. He attended First Tee golf camps in the summer and spent many hours with his dad and brother on the golf course growing in the game and learning important values like patience. Hayden moved out of the area when he was in high school, but his love of golf never wavered. After finishing college, Hayden relocated back to Pinehurst and began working at Charles Schwab as a financial consultant. Hayden was looking for ways to give back to the community and remembered the fun he had as kid with First Tee – Sandhills. Hayden’s love and passion for golf along with his endless supply of patience made him the perfect fit to be a coach!

“After volunteer coaching over the last three years, I can say that I really enjoy coming to class and seeing the kids improve during each eight – week program under our guidance and encouragement. The coaches I’ve volunteered with and the camaraderie we share makes it an easy decision to come back each season. This is truly a place full of great adults, teens and kids!”

Meet Aubriana Bishop

Aubriana Bishop, a freshly minted First Tee – Sandhills Alumni has expanded her role with our chapter this fall as an Intern.

Aubriana joined our chapter four years ago as a teen new to golf, quickly jumped in volunteering with programs, and had the opportunity to attend a National First Tee Participant Opportunity the summer after her junior year in high school. We are thrilled to have Aubriana take on this expanded role and our local chapter. Here’s a quick snapshot about Aubriana Bishop:

First Tee – Sandhills: Tell me a little about yourself? First Tee experience and future goals/endeavors/golf experience?

Aubriana Bishop: Hi all! I like to go by Aubri and I’m a freshman at Sandhills Community College! I started playing golf in 9th grade when I joined the Union Pines High School golf team! It was scary joining with absolutely no experience, but I was a quick learner and had First Tee to help me out! For the rest of high school, I leaned on my time at First Tee to build on my skills. Soon enough, I was not only the team captain, but one of the top players in my district! As for my school ambitions, after getting my associates degree, my goal is to major in a specialty of biological science, most likely genetics! I plan to at least get a masters and hopefully even a PhD in the future. Going into research as a career would be my dream, so I’m working hard to make that a reality!

First Tee – Sandhills: What do you love most about First Tee?

Aubri: My favorite part of First Tee is the connections I’ve been able to make. I get to meet people from all sorts of backgrounds and have made some wonderful friends along the way. Both in the lessons and when coaching, there’s always a fun and inviting atmosphere that I find unique and extraordinary. Its what made me keep coming back year after year for classes, then volunteering, and now my first internship!

First Tee – Sandhills: Who is your favorite women’s golfer and why?

Aubri: My favorite women’s golfer is definitely Lydia Ko! She’s not only a fabulous player, but honestly just seems like a nice down to earth person. She’s extremely inspirational for her amazing skills and performance despite being so young. In between her world records, she’s always smiling and laughing. I value her attitude over anything. You can just tell she’s there because she truly loves the sport.

First Tee – Sandhills: One piece of advice you’d give to First Tee Participants.

Aubri: The best piece of advice I could give First Tee kids is something I wish I could go back and tell my younger self: you’re never too old to do something you love. This was something I struggled with a lot in high school. When I first started golfing, I was convinced that I started too late. Everyone around me had been golfing since they were 4. How was I supposed to catch up to them? Additionally, when I first started participating in program at First Tee, I often felt that I was “too old” for the games and activities. I wouldn’t let myself get excited about them; I had to “act my age” and prove my maturity. I even stopped playing videogames or watching shows I liked because I labeled them as too childish. Now that I’m older and coaching at First Tee, I see myself in some of the kids. While its good to be mature, its so easy to let yourself destroy the things that make you happy. I’m so glad I’ve grown from then, and I’m also happy I’m in a position where I can steer these kids in the right direction.
