Volunteer Coach Spotlight: Meet Lou Giordano!

A Love of Sports

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Lou Giordano grew up immersed in sports. Baseball was his first love, carrying him through high school and beyond. To this day, he remains a loyal Cleveland Guardians fan, a testament to his lifelong passion for athletics and teamwork! Lou dedicated 25 years to the U.S. Navy as a Supply Corps officer, a career defined by leadership, discipline, and service. After retiring from active duty, he transitioned seamlessly into education, serving as a senior instructor with the Navy Junior ROTC program at Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach. Teaching, mentoring, and shaping young leaders became a natural extension of his military career.

Finding a Home in Pinehurst

When retirement arrived, Lou and his wife chose Pinehurst as their next chapter, moving closer to their daughter in Raleigh and into the heart of a community known for its golf legacy. Interestingly, golf didn’t become part of Lou’s life until he turned 39, but once it did, he developed a deep respect for the game, embracing both its challenges and the invaluable life lessons it offers.

Discovering First Tee – Sandhills

Looking for ways to stay active, engaged, and connected with young people, Lou found First Tee – Sandhills. Coaching quickly became a natural fit. “First Tee reminds me of NJROTC in so many ways,” Lou reflects. “While NJROTC builds good citizens and leaders through structure and activities, First Tee teaches kids values through the game of golf. Both are about character development at their core.”

Continuing a Legacy of Mentorship

From his years in the Navy to his time in the classroom, and now on the golf course, Lou has dedicated his life to building up the next generation. Through his work with First Tee – Sandhills, he continues to live that mission of blending his love of golf with his passion for mentorship. We are incredibly grateful to have Lou as part of our First Tee family, and for the example he sets for both our participants and fellow volunteers. His journey is a reminder that no matter where life leads, there is always an opportunity to inspire, teach, and give back.

Jr. Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Blake Fowler!

A Pinehurst Native with Golf in His Roots

Blake has called Pinehurst home his whole life, growing up surrounded by the game of golf. Some of his earliest memories are on the course with his dad, sparking a love for the game that has only deepened over time. In spring 2019, Blake attended his very first First Tee program at Beacon Ridge. Since then, he’s participated in countless programs, camps, and events that have shaped not only his skills on the course but also his growth as a person.

Lessons in Perseverance and Confidence

Through First Tee, Blake has discovered the power of perseverance and confidence, qualities that have helped him thrive as both a competitive golfer and a young leader. Today, he plays competitive golf year-round and gives back to the program that gave him so much by serving as a volunteer coach at First Tee – Sandhills. Blake’s love for golf has even inspired his family. His younger sister, now 10, has joined First Tee programs herself, and often enjoys playing alongside Blake and their dad. For them, golf is more than just a sport, it’s a family tradition!

Giving Back as a Coach

One of Blake’s favorite volunteer memories came during his second summer as a coach. He was welcomed back by kids who remembered his name and were excited to see him again, a moment that reminded him of the impact he was making.

“Seeing kids excited to learn at camp makes me want to keep coming back,” Blake shares. “Watching their growth is so rewarding, and I hope to provide the same fun and encouraging experience my coaches gave me.”

Full Circle

At First Tee – Sandhills, we’re proud to watch Blake’s journey come full circle from participant, to mentor. His story is a testament to the lasting impact of our programs and the power of giving back. We are grateful for his dedication, his passion, and his heart for inspiring the next generation of golfers. Thank you, Blake, for reminding us that the best game we can play is the one where we lift others up.

Board of Directors Spotlight: Meet Bob Klug!

At First Tee – Sandhills, we’ve been fortunate to grow under the guidance of leaders who believed in our mission from the very beginning. One of those foundational figures is Bob Klug, a founding board member, mentor, and tireless advocate whose legacy continues to shape our chapter today.

A Founding Visionary

Bob’s journey with First Tee – Sandhills began in the early 2000s, when he helped establish our chapter. As a longtime Pinehurst resident and owner of Pinehurst Area Realty, Bob recognized how golf could be used to mentor young people and build character. With his background in accounting and years of experience in both business and golf, Bob brought wisdom, heart, and a clear vision for growth.

A Lifelong Love of the Game

Originally from Pennsylvania, Bob played competitive golf in school and carried that passion throughout his life. After moving south, he met his wife Barbara through work, and the two built a life both on and off the course. When Bob competed in the British Amateur, Barbara proudly served as his caddy, a partnership that has only deepened over the years. Today, they share the joy of seven grandchildren, their own cheering gallery in life.

Leading First Tee – Sandhills

As board president, Bob was instrumental in expanding First Tee’s reach across the Sandhills. He forged partnerships with local schools, raised vital funds, and led signature events like the “Bucket List” fundraiser. His leadership helped establish First Tee – Sandhills as a trusted pillar in the community, offering programs that build character and confidence in young people. Even now, in an emeritus role, Bob continues to support First Tee as a mentor, volunteer, and champion of our mission. When asked what stands out most from his experience, Bob is quick to answer. It’s this heart and commitment that make Bob such a special part of our First Tee family. His legacy lives on in every child who finds confidence, every teen who discovers purpose, and every family who feels the power of community through our programs.

“Seeing the growth through the programs, the people, and most importantly, the participants. We get to mentor and encourage them to be their best selves. That’s why I’m here.” Bob Klug

Jr. Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Enoch!

From his very first swing, Enoch French was hooked on golf, and ever since, he’s been a shining example of what it means to grow through the game. Enoch’s First Tee journey began in July 2018, when he attended a summer camp and picked up a golf club for the very first time. That moment sparked a deep love for the game that has only grown stronger over the years. “I was hooked from my very first shot,” he recalls. Originally from Sanford, Enoch and his family relocated to Vass in 2021, planting roots in Moore County where his connection to golf continued to flourish. With a strong family history in the game and countless rounds shared with his dad, golf feels like it’s in his DNA. “It feels like it’s in my blood, he says.

Giving Back as a Junior Volunteer

But Enoch’s story is about more than his own journey, it’s also about the way he’s giving back. Now a proud Junior Volunteer Coach with First Tee – Sandhills, Enoch is dedicated to helping the next generation discover the joy of golf, just like he did. One of his favorite memories as a volunteer came at The Cradle, where he watched young players light up with excitement. Their excitement reminded me of how I felt when I first started,” he shares. “It made me even more excited to stay involved in this awesome game and continue volunteering.” Enoch is a testament to the power of mentorship, the joy of giving back, and the incredible growth that happens when young leaders step up. His passion for golf and his commitment to helping others learn the game embody the spirit of First Tee – Sandhills and the bright future that comes when we build Game Changers together!

Teed Up for Impact: Celebrating Pat McGowan’s Role at First Tee

To many in the world of golf, Pat McGowan is a name that carries weight. A standout professional, Pat earned PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honors in 1978, landed a top-three finish at the 1983 PGA Championship, and spent decades competing at the sport’s highest level. But here at First Tee – Sandhills, we know Pat for something deeper than his achievements on the course: his unwavering belief in the power of golf to shape character, create access, and change lives.

As a Board Member Emeritus, Pat has been with our chapter since the very beginning, playing a foundational role in bringing First Tee to the Sandhills region. Alongside fellow golf advocate and Board Member Bob Klug, Pat championed the idea that golf could, and should, be a vehicle for youth development, particularly for kids who might not otherwise have access to the game.

“The opportunity First Tee gives to the community and these young players is unmatched,” Pat says. “Access, affordability, and mentorship, these are things that aren’t always easy to come by in golf. First Tee opens that door, and that’s the biggest reason I do what I do.”

Though he’s stood on some of the biggest stages in professional golf, Pat’s greatest legacy may lie in his local impact, sharing his knowledge, passion, and heart with the next generation. His dedication to mentorship and service shines through in everything he does, whether he’s engaging in programming, contributing to long-term strategy, or helping to raise the funds that keep our mission alive.

“There’s no way I could ever repay the game of golf for what it’s ultimately taught me,” Pat reflects. “But I can pass that gift on.”

Pat’s presence has been a steady guiding force in the growth of First Tee – Sandhills, helping us build a chapter that doesn’t just teach golf, but fosters belonging, belief, and a lifelong foundation of values. His leadership has shaped the way we show up for our community and for our kids.

Thank you, Pat, for your legacy of leadership, heart, and service throughout. Your belief in the power of the game continues to inspire everything we do. We are so excited you are a part of our First Tee family.

A Life of Leadership: Meet Jack, Volunteer Extraordinaire

At First Tee – Sandhills, we’re lucky to have incredible volunteers who bring their life experiences, passion, and heart to the course. One of those familiar faces is Jack, a man whose story speaks to the very core of what we teach: resilience, integrity, and giving back.

Jack grew up in New York as the eldest of six siblings, a natural-born leader shaped by responsibility at a young age. At just 13, Jack faced the devastating loss of his father, a life-altering event that forced him to grow up quickly. But in true Jack fashion, he leaned into the challenge, showing the kind of strength and character that would guide the rest of his life.

That sense of discipline eventually led Jack to the United States Air Force, where he served his country and laid the foundation for a career built on commitment and integrity. After his military service, Jack transitioned into banking, working his way up to become a senior officer, a role that took him across the country and around the world.

But despite all of his professional success, the hustle and grind of New York City began to take its toll. So Jack enrolled in a six-week course at Duke University, and on a whim, he and his wife decided to spend a night in Pinehurst. One night was all it took. The Sandhills had them both hooked. The peace, the charm, the pace. By the next day, they were touring homes. Just like that, they knew: this was home.

Still, Jack wasn’t quite ready to slow down. A lifelong golfer, known to play up to six rounds a week, he was looking for a way to stay engaged with the game he loves while making a difference. That’s when he found First Tee – Sandhills. For Jack, it was the perfect fit. Our mission aligned with his values, and the opportunity to invest in the next generation through golf was something he couldn’t pass up. Since then, Jack has become a cornerstone of our volunteer team. Dependable, encouraging, and always ready with a story or a smile.

When you ask Jack why he shows up week after week, his answer is simple: “It’s the kids. Watching them grow, not just in their swing, but in confidence, character, and values, it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve been part of.”

We’re incredibly grateful for Jack and the energy, wisdom, and heart he brings to every session. His story is a reminder that no matter where life takes you, there’s always a way to make a meaningful impact, especially when you lead with purpose.

May Volunteer Coach Spotlight: Meet George Lettis!

From the Bronx to Pinehurst: George’s Journey to First Tee

Born and raised in the Bronx, George’s life journey has been one of ambition, adventure, and deep-rooted values. After earning a business degree from Iona College, George stepped into the fast-paced tech world with NCR Corporation, where he sold early computer systems on Wall Street, right at the heart of the digital revolution.

His career flourished as he moved into leadership roles, eventually leading national sales teams and even purchasing his own company in the D.C. area. The business focused on marketing hardware, software, and supplies to architects and engineers. After years of success, George sold the company in 1984, later relocating to Florida, and eventually settling in Pinehurst, North Carolina!

George was married to his beloved wife, Catherine, for 44 years. Together, they raised two incredible children, Amy and George Jr., both proud graduates of the University of Maryland. Family has always been at the heart of George’s story.

In 2021, George joined First Tee – Sandhills shortly after moving to Pinehurst. With a long history of coaching youth sports like basketball, baseball, tennis, and soccer, he was already no stranger to working with young people. But it wasn’t just golf that drew him in…it was the mission behind the game.

For George, what keeps him coming back isn’t just the impact, it’s the people.

“It’s the energy and heart of the First Tee staff that keeps me coming back. Their genuine passion, positivity, and dedication to making every participant feel seen, valued, and excited to show up—it’s truly inspiring to be a part of.”

We’re so thankful for volunteers like George who bring not just experience, but a deep commitment to helping kids grow on and off the course. We’re lucky to have Coach George helping shape the next generation through character, confidence, and a whole lot of fun on the course!

Junior Coach Spotlight: Meet Hailey!

From Local Golfer to Inspiring Mentor

If you’ve spent any time at our “Just Fore Girls” class on Course No. 6, chances are you’ve seen Hailey in action. Bringing energy, encouragement, and a deep passion for the game to every session. A Pinehurst native, Hailey’s golf journey started early and has only grown stronger through the years.

Rooted in the Game

Golf has always been at the heart of Hailey’s life. From playing on both her middle and high school teams to spending the past four years coaching with the LPGA’s Girls Golf program in Whispering Pines, her commitment to the sport runs deep. Last summer, she joined the First Tee – Sandhills family as a coach, helping lead three of our summer camps. And from the start, she was hooked.

Bringing the Energy at Camp

What stood out to Hailey right away? The creativity of our lesson plans, the high-energy atmosphere from both coaches and kids, and the genuine excitement everyone brought to the course each day. One of her favorite memories happened during a girls’ camp last summer when a sudden downpour moved the day’s activities indoors. Instead of slowing down, the girls rallied. Laughing, crafting, and connecting in a way that reminded Hailey just how powerful golf can be in creating lasting friendships and confidence.

Making Meaningful Connections

For Hailey, the game has always been more than just a sport. It’s a tool for growth, a space for connection, and a way to build community.

“Golf really has the power to bring people together—whether it’s teammates, coaches, or a group of kids just starting out,” she says. “There’s something special about the connections formed on the course, and I’ve seen firsthand how the game builds confidence, friendships, and a sense of community.”

Mentorship in Action

Today, Hailey continues to share that passion through her work with our “Just Fore Girls” class, helping a new generation of golfers discover their own strength and spark. She’s not just teaching swing technique—she’s showing young players how to believe in themselves and one another.

We’re so grateful to have Hailey as part of our coaching team at First Tee – Sandhills. Her dedication, heart, and belief in the power of the game are shaping the next wave of game changers!

Coach Spotlight: Meet Mark J!

A Love for the Game That Started Early

Mark’s golf journey began at just 10 years old in Cleveland, Ohio. Back then, he was “shagging” balls for his dad using a baseball glove—a simple start that sparked a lifelong passion. By age 13, he had stepped into the world of caddying, a path that lasted seven years and led to some incredible memories, including carrying bags for National Long Drive Champion Evan “Big Cat” Williams and the legendary Byron Nelson.

From Golf Getaways to a Life in Pinehurst

After many years of annual golf trips to Pinehurst, Mark made the dream a reality when he retired and moved to the area full-time in 2013. Surrounded by the game he loves, Mark eventually found his way to First Tee through a fellow coach—and hasn’t looked back since. For him, it was the perfect way to stay connected to golf while giving back in a meaningful way. Since 2023, Coach Mark has been a dedicated volunteer with First Tee – Sandhills, bringing patience, energy, and heart to every class—especially when working with our youngest golfers. You’ll find him most often with the 5 and 6-year-olds, where his calm presence and encouraging words help our littlest participants grow in confidence and love for the game.

Coaching with Heart and Purpose

Whether he’s helping a player line up their putt or cheering them on after a solid swing, Mark finds joy in the little moments. He’s especially passionate about helping new golfers build confidence and develop their skills in a fun, supportive environment. “Being able to impart the First Tee’s life skills and values to young minds is why I continue to coach and support the organization,” he says.

Making Smiles, One Swing at a Time

For Coach Mark, it’s not just about golf—it’s about the joy that comes with growth. “My favorite moments are every time I see the excitement in a player’s reaction when they connect on a good shot and see it sail to its target,” he shares. “Those huge smiles make it all worthwhile for me.”

We couldn’t be more grateful to have Coach Mark as part of our First Tee family. His kindness, wisdom, and dedication make a lasting impact on every young golfer he meets. Thank you, Mark!

Junior Volunteer Spotlight: Max A.

A Love for Golf Begins

Max Anderson’s journey with First Tee – Sandhills has come full circle. Growing up in Laurinburg, NC, Max first experienced the program as a young participant, developing a love for golf that would shape his future. When his family moved to Pinehurst in 2019, his passion for the game continued to flourish. Along with his growing love for golf, one thing remained constant—his enjoyment of an ice-cold Orange Fanta, a course tradition that has stood the test of time!

From Player to Coach

It was around the age of 10 that Max realized golf was more than just a hobby; it was something he truly loved. The lessons he learned at First Tee—perseverance, confidence, and goal-setting all stuck with him, shaping both his game and his character. Now, as a Junior Volunteer Coach, he’s giving back to the program that gave him so much.

Making an Impact

For Max, coaching isn’t just about helping young golfers refine their skills—it’s about building connections and watching kids grow both on and off the course. One of his favorite parts of coaching is seeing participants step out of their shells and gain confidence. “I hope to leave a lasting impact, inspiring kids to work hard, believe in themselves, and see just how much they can achieve—both on and off the course. I hope the kiddos know that with dedication and heart, the sky’s the limit!” From player to coach, Max embodies what First Tee is all about—helping young people build confidence, develop skills, and achieve goals they once thought were impossible. We’re lucky to have him as part of our team!

Board Member Spotlight 2025: John T.

A Passion for Mentorship & Golf

Originally from the cold, snowy state of Michigan, John and his wife made the move to Pinehurst for a change of pace, drawn by the warmer weather and the promise of year-round golf. It didn’t take long for him to discover First Tee – Sandhills, where he found a meaningful way to combine his love of the game with his passion for working with young people.

In 2020, John joined us as a volunteer, eager to make a difference in the lives of kids in our community. From the very beginning, he embraced First Tee’s core values, serving as a role model and mentor while helping young golfers develop both their skills on the course and the character traits that will serve them for a lifetime. His dedication to setting a positive example and fostering confidence in kids made him a standout leader in our program.

From Coach to Curriculum Innovator

John’s commitment to First Tee only grew stronger over the years. He pursued additional training, becoming a Level II Coach to deepen his impact as an instructor and mentor. But his contributions didn’t stop there. John’s background in engineering allowed him to bring a unique perspective to our programming.

Recognizing the natural connection between golf and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), John played an instrumental role in shaping our STEM Camp Curriculum. By integrating concepts like physics, geometry, and aerodynamics into engaging, hands-on activities, he helped create a program that not only enhances kids’ golf skills but also sparks curiosity and critical thinking. His innovative approach has made STEM Camp one of the most exciting learning experiences we offer!

A New Chapter: Board of Directors

Now, John is taking his leadership to the next level as a member of our Board of Directors. His deep understanding of First Tee’s mission, coupled with his firsthand experience as a coach and mentor, makes him a valuable asset to our organization. He brings fresh ideas, enthusiasm, and a strategic vision that will help us continue to grow and impact even more young lives through the game of golf.

John’s journey from volunteer to board member is a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and community. We are incredibly grateful for his ongoing commitment to First Tee – Sandhills and excited to see the positive influence he will have in this new role.

Please join us in congratulating John on this well-deserved position! We can’t wait to see all the great things he will accomplish as part of our leadership team!
