Board Member Spotlight: Janeen Driscoll

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Janeen Driscoll’s heart bleeds black and gold. The blue-collar, friendly town significantly shaped her work ethic, what she values most, and the premium she places on people and relationships. While her school bus passed a small par-3 course every day growing up, golf held an unapproachable mystique to her. Now, she is passionate about having affordable, accessible golf in small communities. Janeen said that golf “teaches life skills, values, and integrity, and you meet extraordinary humans through it”.

Janeen has had multiple points in her career bring her to the Pinehurst area. From working at Pinehurst Resort and opening Golf House Pinehurst for the USGA, the community has become her family’s forever home. The 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst, her first working for the USGA, was Janeen’s first interaction with First Tee. The USGA was a founding partner of First Tee, and she wanted to learn more about their impact at a local level. Learning more about First Tee and how the youth in the community benefit led her to pursue a more active role. Passionate about the First Tee mission of building character among our communities youth, Janeen describes becoming a board member “a pretty easy choice”.

Janeen’s favorite memory with First Tee – Sandhills “was a summer STEM camp at Pinehurst in 2024, when we used the U.S. Open course to teach kids about how the course was maintained.  I’m a huge fan of sustainable courses, and know the kids had a lot of fun using moisture meters, designing golf holes and planting native plants.  They all appreciated where they play after that day, and the people that provide those terrific playing surfaces.  Memory of a lifetime.

Thank You, Adam Rowen!

As we have closed out the year, First Tee – Sandhills would like to formally recognize and thank Adam Rowen as he concludes his term on our Board of Directors, including his service as Board President through December 2025!

Adam’s leadership has played a meaningful role in the continued growth and strength of our chapter. Throughout his time on the board, he brought a thoughtful, strategic approach paired with a genuine commitment to First Tee’s mission of developing young people through character-building experiences on and off the golf course.

As Board President, Adam helped guide the organization through important moments of progress and planning, always keeping our long-term vision and the impact on our participants at the forefront. His steady leadership, collaborative mindset, and dedication to service have helped position First Tee – Sandhills for continued success.

We are grateful for the time, expertise, and care Adam has given to our organization. His contributions will have a lasting impact on our programs, our community partnerships, and the thousands of young people we serve across the Sandhills.

Thank you, Adam, for your leadership and commitment to First Tee – Sandhills. We wish you continued success in all that’s ahead!

Board of Directors Spotlight: James Ledford

A Passion Sparked Early

Growing up in Walla Walla, Washington, golf was never just a pastime for James, it was a pursuit of greatness. His love for the game was first sparked by watching Jack Nicklaus’s legendary win at the 1986 Masters, a moment that ignited a lifelong passion. As a junior golfer, he admired Freddie Couples, a hometown legend who held every junior record in the region. For James and countless others, Couples set the bar for what was possible, inspiring a generation of young players to chase excellence on and off the course.

A Career Shaped by Serendipity

While working in golf wasn’t part of his original plan, the game became a natural path, one he’s proud to walk each day through his role at Golf Pride and his community involvement. A career opportunity eventually brought him to Pinehurst, a call from Golf Pride that he describes as pure serendipity. “One thing led to another, and here I am, grateful to be part of this incredible golf community,” he reflects.

Discovering First Tee

That same spirit of gratitude and connection soon led him to First Tee – Sandhills. “Shortly after arriving in Pinehurst, I found myself drawn to the mission of First Tee. It didn’t take long before I was pulled in and actively involved,” he shares. When asked what motivated him to serve on the Board of Directors, James points to a clear purpose: “My passion lies in expanding access to golf and the life benefits it provides. At Golf Pride, we’re excited about creating opportunities for kids who may never imagine themselves playing somewhere like Pinehurst. Being part of First Tee allows me to help make that dream a reality!”

A Moment to Remember

One moment that continues to stand out for him came while coaching a joint session with First Tee and the Boys & Girls Club at Legacy Golf Links. “When the bus arrived, the kids poured out, full of energy. Several of them instinctively stopped, dropped, and rolled around on the grass, exclaiming, ‘It’s like carpet!’ They had never seen anything like it. Their joy was contagious. That day reminded me what First Tee is all about…introducing kids to the game, nurturing their wonder, and teaching them to respect the course and each other.”

Board of Directors Spotlight: Meet Bob Klug!

At First Tee – Sandhills, we’ve been fortunate to grow under the guidance of leaders who believed in our mission from the very beginning. One of those foundational figures is Bob Klug, a founding board member, mentor, and tireless advocate whose legacy continues to shape our chapter today.

A Founding Visionary

Bob’s journey with First Tee – Sandhills began in the early 2000s, when he helped establish our chapter. As a longtime Pinehurst resident and owner of Pinehurst Area Realty, Bob recognized how golf could be used to mentor young people and build character. With his background in accounting and years of experience in both business and golf, Bob brought wisdom, heart, and a clear vision for growth.

A Lifelong Love of the Game

Originally from Pennsylvania, Bob played competitive golf in school and carried that passion throughout his life. After moving south, he met his wife Barbara through work, and the two built a life both on and off the course. When Bob competed in the British Amateur, Barbara proudly served as his caddy, a partnership that has only deepened over the years. Today, they share the joy of seven grandchildren, their own cheering gallery in life.

Leading First Tee – Sandhills

As board president, Bob was instrumental in expanding First Tee’s reach across the Sandhills. He forged partnerships with local schools, raised vital funds, and led signature events like the “Bucket List” fundraiser. His leadership helped establish First Tee – Sandhills as a trusted pillar in the community, offering programs that build character and confidence in young people. Even now, in an emeritus role, Bob continues to support First Tee as a mentor, volunteer, and champion of our mission. When asked what stands out most from his experience, Bob is quick to answer. It’s this heart and commitment that make Bob such a special part of our First Tee family. His legacy lives on in every child who finds confidence, every teen who discovers purpose, and every family who feels the power of community through our programs.

“Seeing the growth through the programs, the people, and most importantly, the participants. We get to mentor and encourage them to be their best selves. That’s why I’m here.” Bob Klug

Teed Up for Impact: Celebrating Pat McGowan’s Role at First Tee

To many in the world of golf, Pat McGowan is a name that carries weight. A standout professional, Pat earned PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honors in 1978, landed a top-three finish at the 1983 PGA Championship, and spent decades competing at the sport’s highest level. But here at First Tee – Sandhills, we know Pat for something deeper than his achievements on the course: his unwavering belief in the power of golf to shape character, create access, and change lives.

As a Board Member Emeritus, Pat has been with our chapter since the very beginning, playing a foundational role in bringing First Tee to the Sandhills region. Alongside fellow golf advocate and Board Member Bob Klug, Pat championed the idea that golf could, and should, be a vehicle for youth development, particularly for kids who might not otherwise have access to the game.

“The opportunity First Tee gives to the community and these young players is unmatched,” Pat says. “Access, affordability, and mentorship, these are things that aren’t always easy to come by in golf. First Tee opens that door, and that’s the biggest reason I do what I do.”

Though he’s stood on some of the biggest stages in professional golf, Pat’s greatest legacy may lie in his local impact, sharing his knowledge, passion, and heart with the next generation. His dedication to mentorship and service shines through in everything he does, whether he’s engaging in programming, contributing to long-term strategy, or helping to raise the funds that keep our mission alive.

“There’s no way I could ever repay the game of golf for what it’s ultimately taught me,” Pat reflects. “But I can pass that gift on.”

Pat’s presence has been a steady guiding force in the growth of First Tee – Sandhills, helping us build a chapter that doesn’t just teach golf, but fosters belonging, belief, and a lifelong foundation of values. His leadership has shaped the way we show up for our community and for our kids.

Thank you, Pat, for your legacy of leadership, heart, and service throughout. Your belief in the power of the game continues to inspire everything we do. We are so excited you are a part of our First Tee family.

Board Of Directors: Meet Cole Hershell!

A dedicated business owner, family man, and passionate supporter of youth development through sport, Hershell’s journey has taken him from his roots in Jamaica, West Indies, to New York, and eventually to North Carolina, where he relocated with his wife, Christal, in 2007. Together, they have built not only a thriving business but also a strong foundation for family and community. Hershell is the proud parent of four children and a grandparent to one!

A Career Built on Commitment

Hershell’s professional life has been shaped by his long-standing connection with the McDonald’s brand. After graduating high school in 1994, he began his career with the company, steadily working his way up to co-ownership in 2014, following Christal’s acquisition of her first location in 2008. Today, the couple jointly operates six McDonald’s restaurants across Moore, Lee, and Richmond counties, with exciting expansion plans in the future. Hershell’s business success is matched by his commitment to creating a positive impact for employees, customers, and the communities they serve.

Life Beyond Business

Outside of work, Hershell enjoys life’s simple pleasures. Whether it’s deep-sea, lake, or surf fishing, cheering for his children at travel basketball games, or playing a round of golf with friends on the weekends, being outdoors gives him the chance to recharge and connect with the things he loves most. Family time is also a top priority, barbecues and movie nights are staples in the Cole household.

A Passion for Golf & First Tee

Hershell’s introduction to golf came at age 33, after moving to Pinehurst, a fitting place to discover a love for the game. Over a decade ago, he joined the First Tee – Sandhills Board of Directors and later served as Board Chair from 2019 to 2021. In 2024, Hershell rejoined the board as an Emeritus Member, continuing his deep commitment to the organization. First Tee holds personal meaning for Hershell, not only as a board member but also as a parent. Three of his children have participated in the program, with two developing a true passion for golf. Having witnessed firsthand the positive impact that First Tee has had on his family and community, Hershell believes strongly in the mission of helping young people build life skills through the game.

Board Member Spotlight: Meet Thong Nguyen!

From arriving in the United States as a refugee in 1975 to building a life across four continents during his distinguished Army career, Thong’s story is one of resilience, service, and dedication. His journey eventually brought him to Pinehurst, a place his family now proudly calls home.

Thong’s connection to First Tee – Sandhills began in 2007, when his children discovered a love for golf through our programs. Growing up, golf wasn’t a sport he had access to, making it even more special to watch his kids embrace the game. His daughter Lizzy took that passion all the way to Georgetown University, playing at the collegiate level.

For Thong, First Tee has always been more than just a golf program, it’s been a place where his family built lasting memories, developed life skills, and connected with the community. Giving back to an organization that played such a pivotal role in his family’s life felt like a natural next step.

While Thong is new to the board, he’s no stranger to our mission. He’s proudly supported his wife, Jennifer, in her own decade of service to First Tee, celebrating alongside her as she was recognized for her volunteer leadership. Now, he’s ready to bring his own passion, perspective, and dedication to help us continue building game changers both on and off the course.

We are thrilled to have Thong on the First Tee – Sandhills Board of Directors, and look forward to the impact he will make in the years ahead!

Board Member Spotlight 2025: John T.

A Passion for Mentorship & Golf

Originally from the cold, snowy state of Michigan, John and his wife made the move to Pinehurst for a change of pace, drawn by the warmer weather and the promise of year-round golf. It didn’t take long for him to discover First Tee – Sandhills, where he found a meaningful way to combine his love of the game with his passion for working with young people.

In 2020, John joined us as a volunteer, eager to make a difference in the lives of kids in our community. From the very beginning, he embraced First Tee’s core values, serving as a role model and mentor while helping young golfers develop both their skills on the course and the character traits that will serve them for a lifetime. His dedication to setting a positive example and fostering confidence in kids made him a standout leader in our program.

From Coach to Curriculum Innovator

John’s commitment to First Tee only grew stronger over the years. He pursued additional training, becoming a Level II Coach to deepen his impact as an instructor and mentor. But his contributions didn’t stop there. John’s background in engineering allowed him to bring a unique perspective to our programming.

Recognizing the natural connection between golf and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), John played an instrumental role in shaping our STEM Camp Curriculum. By integrating concepts like physics, geometry, and aerodynamics into engaging, hands-on activities, he helped create a program that not only enhances kids’ golf skills but also sparks curiosity and critical thinking. His innovative approach has made STEM Camp one of the most exciting learning experiences we offer!

A New Chapter: Board of Directors

Now, John is taking his leadership to the next level as a member of our Board of Directors. His deep understanding of First Tee’s mission, coupled with his firsthand experience as a coach and mentor, makes him a valuable asset to our organization. He brings fresh ideas, enthusiasm, and a strategic vision that will help us continue to grow and impact even more young lives through the game of golf.

John’s journey from volunteer to board member is a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and community. We are incredibly grateful for his ongoing commitment to First Tee – Sandhills and excited to see the positive influence he will have in this new role.

Please join us in congratulating John on this well-deserved position! We can’t wait to see all the great things he will accomplish as part of our leadership team!

I look forward to seeing where First Tee – Sandhills will go in the years to come!”

Board Member Spotlight: Bob

With a father in the golf course maintenance industry, Bob grew up on the golf courses of West Virginia in more ways than one. After graduating from Marshall University, Bob followed in his father’s footsteps, joining the grounds team at Pinehurst Resort & CC in 1982, recently celebrating 40 years! Making the Pinehurst community home, Bob and his wife Kathy have given back feverishly through organizations such as Meals on Wheels, YoungLife, Moore Buddies and their church… just to name a few! Sandhills Board President, Mark Reinemann, introduced Bob to First Tee in 2017. Quickly realizing the organizations values and mission aligned with his family’s, Bob was proud to get involved.

“To be effective on the Board of Directors, you must first share the values and mission of the organization by “wearing the brand and waving the banner” throughout the community. This is something I try to do every day.”

Board Member Spotlight: Stuart

Stuart grew up locally in the Fayetteville area. He attended graduate school at Tulane University and spent many years working in New Orleans. Stuart was initially introduced to First Tee during his time in Louisiana. The golf club he worked at housed the sectional PGA headquarters for the Gulf States and they were involved with the launch of First Tee – New Orleans. Upon moving back to his hometown in 2009, Stuart was asked to play in First Tee – Sandhills annual tournament, Drive 4 Kids. From there, he became more involved with the organization and later joined the Board of Directors in hopes of aiding in the expansion of First Tee into Fayetteville and the surrounding cities.

“Shortly after I joined the board, I visited a class at Gates Four Golf & CC to see how the kiddos receive the instruction, how passionate our coaches are about their mentorship role, and the smiles that came from both the teachers and kids. This really connected me to what we do, how we do it, and most importantly, why we do it.”

Board Member Spotlight: Teresa

Teresa grew up in the mountains of Southwest Virginia. From the first moment Teresa stepped into Pinehurst back in 2001, she knew it was a place she wanted to live. After an extensive career in Human Resources, she retired in 2017 from Wells Fargo and moved to the Sandhills full time. As a passionate supporter of local nonprofits and her personal mission to create environments that nurture growth, it was no surprise Teresa found her way to First Tee – Sandhills. She joined the Board of Directors in 2021 and hasn’t looked back!

“The focus the organization has on building character and core values through activities from an early age through teens was key for me. We learn by doing and the programs delivered through First Tee are grounded in experiential learning.”
