Volunteer Spotlight: Jack Finnerty

Meet Jack, a familiar face around the First Tee – Sandhills office and a volunteer whose journey is just as inspiring as the values he helps instill in our participants. Jack grew up in New York as the eldest of six siblings. His character and leadership were shaped early on, especially after the loss of his father when Jack was just 13 years old. That pivotal moment forced him to grow up quickly, taking on responsibilities well beyond his years. The discipline and resilience Jack developed during this time would carry him forward throughout his life.

Service and Success

His strength and focus eventually led him to the United States Air Force, where he built a foundation of service, integrity, and commitment. Following his military service, Jack transitioned into the banking industry, rising through the ranks to become a senior officer. His career took him across the country and even around the globe, but the fast pace of New York’s city life eventually began to wear thin.

Discovering the Sandhills

Everything changed after Jack attended a six-week course at Duke University. On a whim, he and his wife decided to spend a night in Pinehurst. One night was all it took. The peace, the beauty, and the charm of the Sandhills instantly won them over. The very next day, they toured homes and decided this would be their forever home! Being a lifelong golf enthusiast known to play up to six times a week, Jack wasn’t ready to hang up his clubs. He wanted to stay connected to the game while also giving back to something greater. That’s when he discovered First Tee – Sandhills. For Jack, it was the perfect opportunity to merge his love of golf with his lifelong values of mentorship, service, and community.

Why He Volunteers

When asked what keeps him coming back week after week, Jack doesn’t hesitate: “It’s the kids.” Watching young participants grow in confidence, character, and skill fuels his passion and commitment to the program. From a childhood of responsibility to a career of service and leadership, Jack’s story is one of resilience and purpose. Thank you Jack, for all you do in-house for us.
